Xboxaholics Anonymous

January 29, 2008

Well, I managed to endure the crazed few winter months – escaping relatively unscathed, fighting fit, and with a shiny new Xbox 360 tucked under my flabby post-Chrimbo bicep. And I am thoroughly addicted.

Okay, after receiving this marvellous gift from my reluctant folks, my attention was focused on drinking heavily through New Years and my 23rdbirthday (it’s the only feasible way to get through such soul-destroying events). The Xbox lay abandoned, awaiting my annual flu with corresponding 3-week hibernation period, which kicked in early January and just in time to ruin my holiday, I hasten to add.

It all started innocently enough – a little Gears of War here, some Halo 3there. But soon after a visit to GAME’s pre-owned sale section (yes, many bargains, much double-cheapness), the tiny shelf space cleared in anticipation of pretty new titles got full mighty quick. Amped 3, Oblivion, Table Tennis, and – yea Gods have mercy – Viva Pinata all stole my attention and ability to function in normal society for days at a time. But they were just the mere crumbs of an addiction-flavoured cake, topped so very deliciously with the irresistible icing of Lego Star Wars: the Complete Saga.

I was lost. Even the simple act of going to the pub was a daunting prospect: I envisioned pints of Lego Brick lager, and struggled to comprehend why the lamppost didn’t smash into a zillion Lego studs after a drunken bum was thrown against it by his half-wit stoner mate.

And now, after what feels like hours (but is more likely to be weeks) of my life has been pissed away pulling arms off Imperial Stormtroopers and slapping Jar-Jar Binks about like a cheap cockney prostitute, I discovered this:

lego indiana jones

LucasArts and TT Games today announced that LEGO® Indiana Jones®: The Videogame [working title] will whip onto game consoles everywhere in summer 2008. Developed by the same team at Traveller’s Tales that created the LEGO Star Wars™ series, LEGO Indiana Jones presents a tongue-in-cheek take on the first three cinematic adventures of pop culture’s most iconic archaeologist, including Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

May God have mercy on my soul.

-Ahem- yes, I am aware that this is a really really really old announcement (from July of last year, or so I am told), but I’m a late Xbox bloomer, and I only came across this wonderful piece of news through a ‘Bonus’ Level in the bloody Star Wars game.

It’s got me wondering about the nature of addiction, and if such a thing as an ‘Xbox-aholic’ exists, and more importantly, if they hold regular meetings in my area.
